Planting FertilizerThe presence or absence of important plant fertilizers is crucial in the first few months in the life of plants and shrubs. Undertaking a soil analysis can pin-point any specific deficits that can be corrected before they become a problem for the plants. The major plant fertilizers that are required by plants are N, P and K, nitrogen, phosphate and potassium respectively. Although seedlings may become established, access to plant fertilizer can become an issue at the point in time when they are transplanted from the nursery to their final destination. These problems can be overcome with the use of mycorrhizal amendments and plant fertilizer.
Mycorrhizal are fungi have for over 400 million years developed symbiotic relationships with plants. This innovative area of landscape technology has been much studied with over 50,000 research studies investigating the relationship between each organism. Mycorrhizal fungi excrete chemicals that dissolve mineral nutrients, absorb water, retard soil pathogens, and flocculate soil particles into a porous structure. In return, the Mycorrhizae fungus receives compounds from plants. Both plant and fungus benefit from the "symbiotic relationship". Cleverly plants also have the ability to regulate this relationship and turn it on and off as and when the plants receive the most benefit, generally when the plant is under stress. Generally they are regarded as a natural extension of the plants own network. Scientific evidence demonstrates that the plants benefits from improved plant nutrient and water uptake, increased resistance to a range of soil diseases and environmental stresses. Plants become established more quickly, fruit and flower more abundantly allowing areas thrive with less irrigation, fertilizer, and pesticides.
