Message Board - Soft Landscaping: Bluebells and snowdrops

24 Jan 2012 by Harry

I've been asked by a cliet to plant two large areas out with bluebells and snowdrops. I've told my client that it's too late to plant them now and to get them to flower this year. However does anyone know if I can bulbs that are in flower, or will flower this year? I'm prettu sure you can't get them, unless it's a small show garden, but then they aren't planted to survive. It doesn't matter if all the plants die after a show, but my client wants them to last for many many years.

I wouldn't have thought you could get bulbs that were already flowering. It would be mad to plant them as they are unlikely to survive. All th energy in the bulb will go to the flowers and leaves, when it should be sending roots down for water and nutrients.

If your client really really wants the snowdrops and bluebells in flower, why don't you offer to plant a small area that is in view with bulbs that have already flowered? But make sure you tell them that they are going to die, 100% guaranteed. That's if you can find some in flower in the first place.
